Chapter 14:
“Gwen? Gwen? Are you there?” exclaimed
Mrs. Macy, scared. A familiar buzz met her ears. She called the number again, but
no one answered.
“Uh oh,” she said quietly. Then she
called 911. She told them about Gwen and the cops sent a search party.
“Where’s Gwen, Mom?” questioned Megan
alertly.
“She didn’t say. Something happened and
she stopped talking.”
Gwen’s mom burst into tears. Mr. Macy
got up and hugged her, silent tears streaking his face, too. Megan was next.
Then Mandy, then Tim. They all huddled together and hugged until their ribs
felt to the point of bursting.
“We’ll find her,” squeaked Mandy. “We’ve
got too.”
Meanwhile, Gwen had lost all
hopes.
“Don’t you have a cell phone?” She
urged Hannah desperately.
“Nope. Not until I’m a Junior in High
School,” she wailed.
Gwen had an idea.
“I saw this in a movie once. Maybe it’ll help us.”
She began moving along the grungy walls
of the room. She knocked on every inch. She knocked and knocked and knocked
and- felt a weak spot about a foot away from a filthy couch with mites. Hannah
ran over.
“Look,” she breathed. There were
markings all over a mossy part of the area. They looked like a family.
“Maybe if we pull along the cracks on
either side we’ll find something!” Gwen said happily. They took a side of the marking’s
cracks.
Hannah counted. “One, two, three!” They
pulled with all their strength. Then Gwen screamed.
