Meanwhile, Gwen woke up with a start as a girl shook her. She opened her eyes, and examined the van. She and the girl were in the backseat, and separating the front seat from the back were bars like in a sheriff’s car. There were four men in the front seat, but Gwen couldn’t see their faces clearly. She swung her head and looked at the girl opposite her. She was skinny, her complexion was pale, and she had scrawny shoulders. She had a purple dress that was quite pretty, actually, it was made of shiny material and had a sleek lavender ribbon tied across the front. The girl had her shiny dirty blond hair swept up in a tight bun. She looked around Gwen’s age, twelve or thirteen, and she was very pretty in Gwen’s opinion.
“My name’s Hannah,” The girl said in a whisper.
“Hey Bert! Looks like they woke up!” A particularly fat man yelled.
“Well, it looks like they did! Just in time, too!” A man with a few strands of wispy black hair turned around and eyed them with two black beady eyes. The van came to a halt.
“What are you going to do?” Gwen asked in a small voice.
Bert just smiled and cackled harshly. He opened the door and stepped out, slamming it shut behind him. He slid open the backseat door. Then he pulled Hannah and Gwen out of the car. Up close, Gwen realized that the van was less attractive close up. The guy grabbed them by the arm and walked them through a part of the city woods until they came across a dingy cabin. It was in horrible shape, even on the outside the two girls could tell that it had been abandoned, so it would have rats. Gwen shuddered at the thought. Bert took out a gold key, inserted it into the lock on the slimy doorknob, and pushed Gwen and Hannah inside. Then he stepped outside, and closed the door, locking it afterwards. The girls could hear his footsteps trudging through leaves and sticks as he left them alone in the cabin, and all the hope in the world seemed to collapse in their laps.
