Your governor and mine (well, mine) took seriously a suggestion in his comment box that California start getting rid of waste by holding a garage sale. Check out the warehouse where the Department of General Services has begun to tag surplus items for the August 28th event.
I was not surprised to see hundreds of CPUs and scores of big wooden desks dating back to the Unruh era, but ... diamond rings and pianos? Would love to know the stories behind some of these state purchases.
That's not a piano, that's (probably) a harmonium, Notice the knobs above the keyboard. Very harmonium-like. Or possibly a player-piano. But I lean towards the harmonium theory. Still doen't explain what exactly the state of CA was doing purchasing harmoniums, though. Out of sheer spite I'm going to say that they were an early example of the Reagan-administration's senilty-inspired decisions. ("Nancy, the knobsw are so pretty...").
And yes,I think RR was gaga when he was governor. Nothing else could explain the mess he made of the state.

I found out the diamond rings were once confiscated by CHP in drug raids. Probably the same with a lot of other stuff for sale.
