A bunch of us that belong to a Flickr pool agreed to do photo essays of a particular place in Sacramento County - in this instance, Mather Field, the ex-Air Force base that's making a second life for itself. The photo essay idea was a really fun one - I hope we can do it again soon.
Anyway, here's my photo set on Mather. Somewhere in there you'll find my roller skating daughter. She's mad for skating, I tell you. Monday morning, we were getting ready for school and work, and I had my head in the fridge, and I heard wheels rolling on the kitchen floor. I pulled up, ready to snap at her - but the wheels turned out to be the ones on her rolling backpack.
"Would you have been mad if I'd been wearing my skates?" she asked.
"No - but knowing you, I would not have been surprised."
The thing about Mather (pronounced with a long a, soft th) is that to the south of the property are spectacular vernal pools that have never been touched by development. All that may change soon - now that the base is closed, that land is being eyed greedily by developers who want to install even more suburban sprawl.
Just out of curiosity, did the Air Force happen to leave any spare B-52s or portable nuclear missles lying around when they left? My neighbors are pissing me off and I thought an evening or two of saturation bombing or even a 50K warhead left on their porch might send them a message....
And not to be too...well...curious, were there any young enlisteds accidentally left behind ala "Home Alone" who might need a domicile for awhile? You have no idea how envious your friends can get when you bring home your own personal flyboy. Beats pink lawn flamingos by a sky-high mile...

I might have known your mind would take this turn. Any mention of the military ...
